Exterior painting in Tralee, County Kerry

Exterior painting in Tralee is a weather job before it is a decorating job. The town sits at the head of Tralee Bay with prevailing south-westerlies coming straight off the Atlantic, so north and west elevations take the worst of the driven rain while south-facing walls take the UV. That is why the same house often has sound paint on one gable and algae, flaking and blown render on another. We survey every elevation separately and price them separately — there is no point charging for four sides at the same spec when only two are failing.

The render itself decides the system. Older terraces around Boherbee, Rock Street and Strand Street are typically wet dash or sand-and-cement that needs a breathable masonry paint so trapped moisture can still escape. The 1970s-1990s estates in Oakpark, Ballyard, Cloonbeg and Killeen are mostly pebbledash or dry dash, which drinks paint and needs a stabilising primer plus generous coverage rates rather than a thin two coats. Newer builds around Manor West and Clash are usually smooth render or acrylic through-colour, where the risk is hairline cracking rather than absorption. Getting this wrong is the single most common reason an exterior repaint in Kerry fails inside three years.

Every job starts with a power wash and a biocide wash to kill the algae, lichen and moss that Kerry's damp climate grows on north-facing walls — painting over living growth simply seals it in and it comes back through the new coat. Cracks are cut out and filled, blown render is hacked off and patched, and bare or chalky substrate is stabilised before a single top coat goes on. Fascia, soffit, gutters, downpipes, window reveals, doors and railings are prepped and painted as part of the same visit so the finish reads as one job.

Timing matters more here than almost anywhere in Ireland. We work to substrate temperature and moisture readings rather than the calendar, and the realistic Tralee window runs from roughly April to early October, with settled spells in spring giving the best cure. We will not apply a masonry coat onto a wall that is still carrying rain, and we would rather move a date than hand over work that will not last. Access is quoted upfront too — scaffold or tower for two-storey gables and for the terraces where there is no side access, all of it insured for work at height.

  • Elevation-by-elevation survey and pricing, so you only repaint what has actually failed.
  • Breathable masonry systems for older wet-dash terraces; stabilised systems for pebbledash estates.
  • Power wash plus biocide treatment as standard — algae and lichen killed, not painted over.
  • Fascia, soffit, gutters, downpipes and railings prepped and finished in the same visit.
